Vinyl Replacement Windows

Window on a hill
Vinyl Windows

If the picture-framing around the glass is made of vinyl, the window is called a “Vinyl Window” (The term “Vinyl Windows” refers to the frame of the window).  Vinyl, more than wood or metal, is a relatively inexpensive product for making window frames, meaning that costs can be kept low.  There are many reasons why Vinyl Windows dominate the Replacement Window market but the primary benefit is Energy Efficiency, especially in primarily warm climates like that of Dallas.  Vinyl Windows conduct less heat and cold than metal (Aluminum or Steel) windows.  Direct sunlight can heat a metal window frame to temperatures far above the temperature outside, but vinyl windows stay relatively cool and resist the transfer of heat / cold to the inside of the home.

Benefits of Vinyl Windows
  • Low Cost:  Mass production has lowered the cost of vinyl replacement windows and made them the most affordable option for energy efficiency available.
  • Less Conductive than Metal (more energy efficient): Inside, vinyl window frames remain relatively cool even as the outside temperatures rise.  Outside, vinyl window frames resist temperatures that would cause the exterior silicone seal to fail.
  • Low Maintenance: Vinyl windows never need to be painted.  They do not rot or get eaten by termites or carpenter ants.  High quality vinyl windows do not fade, warp, rust or corrode. Occasional rinsing with a common water hose is smart but not entirely necessary to maintain the look of new vinyl windows.
  • Noise Reduction:  Vinyl is a poor conductor of sound.  The same things that make vinyl windows energy efficient also make them sound efficient.
  • Flexible:  Vinyl frames flex and move as a home moves without affecting the seal or the energy efficiency of the window.
  • No Condensation:  Metal windows sweat in the winter because when warm (moist) interior air cools rapidly against cold window frames it contracts and releases moisture.  Inside, vinyl window frames remain relatively warm even when the outside temperatures are freezing.

Disadvantages of Vinyl Windows
  • Color:  Because dark colors absorb heat, vinyl window manufacturers are reluctant to offer dark colored windows.  If the vinyl were to absorb too much heat, they would warp.  For this reason, vinyl windows are primarily offered in standard white and tan (beige, almond) colors. In some cases, other colors can be laminated onto the window at an additional cost.  If the benefit of vinyl windows is that they never need to be painted, the disadvantage is that they are very difficult to paint even if you wanted to.

Efficient Vinyl Window Image
  • Vinyl Replacement Windows are specifically manufactured for energy efficiency.
  • Vinyl Frame is less conductive and resists heat transfer. Vinyl Windows also adjust to the natural movement of the typical North Texas home.
  • A reflective mixture, added to the glass, allows visible light to pass while resisting UV (heat).
  • Not only are there two panes of glass but each is very thick and divided by a large gap that is filled with dense gas.

Vinyl Quiet Window Image
  • The same things that make a window energy efficient also make it sound efficient.
  • Vinyl Window Frames conduct less sound than metal (aluminum / steel) window frames.
  • Because the window doesn't conduct as much heat, the seals never heat up to the point of failure that would allow sound to pass.
  • Thicker glass, along with Laminated Glass and dissimilar glass, available with replacement windows can drastically reduce sound transmittance.

Tilt-in Vinyl Window Image
  • Vinyl Replacement Windows tilt inward. Cleaning the outside glass from inside is easy. No more ladders.
  • Grids of Vinyl Replacement Windows are installed BETWEEN the two panes of glass. The result is an interior and exterior solid piece of glass with no grid edges to clean around.
  • Most vinyl replacement window sashes can be tilted inward allowing easy cleaning of the exterior glass from the inside of the home.

Standard Color

Extruded white vinyl replacement window frames are the least expensive color option. The vinyl itself is white, is not painted and will never need to be painted. There is absolutely no risk of warping and maintenance is almost completely unnecessary.

Standard Color

Extruded beige colored vinyl replacement window frames are as common as white. Occasionally a manufacturer will offer an "Almond" color replacement window (a little more yellow than beige) as a substitute. Beige windows typically cost a little more than white.

Standard (conditionally)

Extruded clay colored vinyl replacement window frames are becoming more common. Clay is the darkest color that most vinyl producers will extrude for replacement windows. Dark colors absorb heat and if the window gets too hot, it will warp. Extruded clay colored window frames are safe from warping but we wouldn't recommend anything darker.

Special Order

Obviously, anything is available at a price. Manufacturers are sometimes willing to paint windows (with a reduced warranty) or laminate them. Adams Exteriors will regularly sell and install dark painted / laminated replacement windows after approval from the customer.

Heating Season Savings

In climates with a significant heating season, non-energy efficient windows can represent a major source of unwanted heat loss, discomfort, and condensation problems. In recent decades, windows have undergone a technological revolution. It is now possible to have lower heat loss, less air leakage, and warmer window surfaces that improve comfort and minimize condensation. The graphs below illustrate the simulated savings in heating season costs associated with energy efficient windows for a typical house in a heating-dominated climate. The savings shown do not include possible savings from reduced air leakage. Depending on the condition of the old windows in an existing home, the savings can be higher if window replacement leads to long-term air leakage reduction.
