Mortar, brick and moisture

Most brick problems start in the mortar. When joints crack or erode, water gets into the wall. Tuckpointing grinds out failing mortar and packs in new mortar matched in color and strength. Mortar should be softer than the brick, so the joints, not the bricks, take the wear.

Cracks that run in stair steps through the joints can be a sign the foundation has moved. Repairing the brick alone won’t fix that, and we’ll tell you if that’s what we see.

Permit rules vary. DeSoto, for example, requires a permit to replace brick on the outside of a house.

Brick and mortar questions

Can new mortar match the old color?

We can get close by testing mixes. New mortar usually looks lighter at first and blends in as it weathers.

Should I paint my brick?

That’s your choice, but think it through first. McKinney, for example, recommends against painting unpainted brick in its historic district.
