Hail is part of life here

North Texas has had some of the costliest hailstorms in U.S. history. The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office ranks the May 5, 1995 Mayfest storm first, at about $1.62 billion in 2013 dollars, followed by April 28, 1992, April 5, 2003 and June 13, 2012. On April 11, 2016, hail up to 5.25 inches damaged an estimated 80% of homes in Wylie.

Hail damage isn’t always obvious from the ground. On shingles it shows up as dark bruises where granules have been knocked off, sometimes with cracked mats underneath. Soft metal tells the story too: dents in vents, gutters and downspouts show the size of the hail that hit.

Wind damage looks different: shingles creased or lifted at the edges, missing tabs, and debris on the roof.

After a hailstorm

How soon after a storm should I get my roof checked?

As soon as practical. Hidden damage can turn into leaks later, and insurance policies set their own deadlines for filing.

Can hail damage a roof without causing a leak?

Yes. Bruised shingles can lose granules and age faster even if they don’t leak right away.
