A repair removes the damaged boards, checks the sheathing and house wrap behind them, and puts in new boards that are primed, caulked and painted to match. Finding the cause matters as much as the fix; rot under a window often comes from failed flashing or caulk above it.
Most cities don’t require a permit to replace a few boards with the same material. Arlington, for example, exempts replacing siding with material of similar character.
