Replacing a door

An exterior door is only as good as its fit. We check the frame for rot and square, set the new door plumb, and seal and weatherstrip it. A door that sticks, drafts or lets light through at the edges usually needs more than new weatherstripping.

Permit rules for doors vary. Carrollton doesn’t require a permit for a same-size door replacement, but does if the opening changes. Coppell, Cedar Hill and Flower Mound require a permit for exterior door replacement, and Flower Mound requires new doors to meet its energy code.

Does a door replacement need a permit?

In some cities. Coppell, Cedar Hill and Flower Mound require one; Carrollton doesn’t for a same-size swap. In Mesquite, the permit is $30 per opening.

Can you make a door opening bigger?
