Changing the size of an opening

Making an opening wider means cutting into the wall and putting in a header sized for the new span, since the wall above still has to be carried. Making one smaller means framing in the extra space, then patching sheathing, siding or brick outside and drywall inside.

This is where permit rules get stricter. Carrollton, Addison and St. Paul don’t require a permit for a same-size window swap, but changing the size of an opening is a different matter. Carrollton requires a permit for it, and enlarging an opening is on Addison’s permit list.

Opening questions

Will the outside match after an opening is changed?

We patch the siding or brick to match as closely as possible. With brick, a perfect color match isn’t always possible, and we’ll talk about options first.

Does changing an opening need a permit?

In most cities, yes, even where a same-size replacement doesn’t. Carrollton is a clear example.
