Planning a pergola

Placement matters as much as the design. A pergola on the west side of the house shades the afternoon sun, and the spacing and direction of the top slats decide how much shade it gives. Posts need solid footings, and a pergola attached to the house has to be fastened to the structure properly.

Many cities treat pergolas and patio covers as structures that need a permit. Flower Mound, Murphy, Highland Village, Hickory Creek and DeSoto require one, and in Mesquite a patio cover permit is $75. Setbacks and HOA rules can also limit where one can go.

Pergola questions

Do I need a permit for a pergola?

In many cities, yes. Murphy and Hickory Creek list pergolas by name, and Flower Mound requires a building permit for patio covers and arbors.

Does my HOA need to approve it?

Often. Check your deed restrictions before you finalize the design.
