How a roofing job starts

Most roof questions come down to one decision: repair or replace. We look at the shingles, flashing, vents and any soft spots in the decking, then tell you which makes sense and why. If a repair will do, that’s what we quote.

Permit rules for roofing vary a lot across Dallas–Fort Worth. Garland requires a permit for repairs once they reach $2,000, Richardson once work passes 25% of the roof, and Irving above 100 square feet. Coppell wants a permit for any roof repair or replacement. Many cities cap a roof at two layers of shingles, so a house that already has two needs a full tear-off.

Roofing questions

Can new shingles go over my old roof?

Sometimes. The International Residential Code allows two layers of shingles at most, so if there’s already a second layer, the old roofing has to come off. A tear-off also lets you see and fix damaged decking.

Have you done roofing in Dallas?

Yes. One recent example is a Dallas roof replacement in CertainTeed shingles, color Moire Black, shown above.
